Worker Killed In Sydney Factory
20 May 2008
A man has been crushed to death by a packaging machine at a Sydney factory, the Australian Workers Union says. As reported by AAP, May 20 2008.
The man was carrying out a maintenance task on the packaging machine at Vinidex in Smithfield, in the city's west, when it somehow activated, killing him instantly, the AWU said in a statement.
The incident occurred about 12.30am on Sunday, and was now in the hands of WorkCover.
AWU state secretary Russ Collison described the circumstances of the man's death as horrific.
"This is an absolute tragedy and we need to find out all the facts of how this fatality occurred," he said.
"Losing a workmate in these circumstances is just horrific."
Mr Collison said the union was not aware if the man's relatives had been informed of his death, adding that his wife was understood to be overseas.
"Our thoughts go to the victim's family and to those workmates who will obviously be affected by this tragedy," he said.
Vinidex management was unavailable when comment was sought late this afternoon.
